Analysis of Improvements in the Effectiveness of Speed Feedback Trailers

The objective of this project are as follows: (1) Conduct a synthesis of best practices in the use of speed feedback trailer (SFT)s as a speed management treatment through an extensive literature review and state agency survey. This synthesis will provide details of available SFTs, state policies/guidelines/provisions for deployment of SFTs in work zones, effective messaging strategies, and additional enhancements. Particular emphasis will be given to the states participating in the SWZDI pooled fund. (2) Perform a field study to assess the operational and safety effectiveness of speed feedback trailers across various deployment characteristics (e.g., trailer placement within the work zone, proximity to workers, duration of work zone, etc.) (3) Evaluate recent improvements to SFT designs and operational capabilities. (4) Provide guidance and recommendations on the use of SFT in work zones, including design, installation, operational, or technological strategies to maximize effectiveness
