Usefulness and Reliability of Probe Data when Altering Work Zone Message Signs

This project has three objectives: (1) improve the understanding of the effectiveness of alternative types of probe data to develop work zone performance measures, (2) explore the combination of multiple types of probe data to determine if this leads to a more powerful approach for work zone monitoring, and (3) verify the accuracy of quantitative probe data by comparison against ground truth data sets. The goal is to develop a report that encapsulates this information and offers guidance on data source selection for work zone monitoring. The research approach takes on the problem using two groups of tasks. The first group focuses on information gathering. The second group of tasks focuses on the collection of real-world data to facilitate comparison of alternative work zone data sets to achieve the study objectives. To support this project, the research team will leverage the data resources available at the Institute for Transportation’s Real-Time Analytics of Transportation Data (REACTOR) Laboratory, including AVL and CV data described previously, as well as Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT’s) network of radar speed sensors, automated traffic recorders, and video cameras distributed throughout the Interstate highway system across the state.
