27th Street RR Crossing - Billings

The proposed research would use an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) for data collection and real-time information sharing to road users about at-grade railroad crossing events. ITS or Intelligent Transportation System provides technology to monitor and analyze traffic patterns and can be used in a number different applications. The ITS evaluation, in this case, identified the potential for an Excessive Delay Warning System (EDWS) to provide inform the traveling public of excessive delays from an on-going or anticipated railroad crossing event. This information allows the traveling public to make an informed decision on whether to remain in queue, reroute their trip, or change their destinations. The idea for this project would be to research potential technologies, how they perform and how the public responds, and how they could be implemented in the area. A task in this project would be to pilot these technologies for a period of time to see if they can help implement a better condition in this area (i.e. give the road user the information needed to make an informed decision as previously stated). This at grade railroad crossing separates medical facilities, airport, and the business district on the north from road users on the south including interstate travel. Delays have led to longer response times for emergency service vehicles and public input has supported mitigating in some fashion. The intent of this project is to give road users the ability to make an informed decision about an estimated wait time for a train crossing event and possible alternate routes of travel.
