Necessary Infrastructure Accommodations for Automated Trucks and Truck Platoons
This project is intended to get a clearer understanding of key topics including the infrastructure needed to adopt autonomous trucking and platooning as well as the status of the industry itself. The advancement of autonomous technology offers benefits such as the ability to mitigate the shortage of drivers, lower fuel consumption, and lower emissions released. However, the technology to make driverless trucks a reality requires US roads to be modified in order for the two to exchange information. Another challenge is the changing industry, from start-ups dissolving, technological advancement, and news of incidents involving autonomous vehicles, it becomes a question of when driverless trucks will enter the roads and how it is going to be received by the public. TTI researchers will identify and survey the appropriate stakeholders to gather information pertaining to specific infrastructure needs, challenges, solutions, and economic and policy considerations.
