Roadmap to Update Section 9 of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications

Section 9 of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications addresses the analysis and design of bridge decks. The focus of Section 9 is on the information owners and designers need for the analysis and design of bridge decks on multiple types of bridges using a variety of bridge decks and bridge deck systems. Design decisions have a direct influence on the resulting service life achieved for the bridge decks and systems and need to be compatible with bridge owner maintenance and repair strategies. With new information available related to the use of the Specifications, and the consolidation and development of new technologies and methodologies, work is necessary to identify the steps for a comprehensive update of Section 9 of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. The objective of this project is to develop a roadmap to update or re-write Section 9 of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. The final deliverables will help the AASHTO Committee on Bridges and Structures to move forward with its plan of updating Section 9 of the AASHTO LRFD Specifications.
