Concrete Bridge Deck Crack Sealing

Bridge decks are prone to various types of cracking due to various factors, including traffic loads, temperature variations, moisture, and chemical exposure. Cracking in bridge decks can lead to the deterioration of the structure, compromising its safety and longevity. The overall objective research aims to benefit the Illinois Department of Transportation by providing a simple guide for treating bridge deck cracks, which is currently unavailable. The detailed objective is achieved by doing the following: identifying causes of bridge deck cracks, specifying types of cracks and their most common type, exploring different types of cracks sealers and how they are applied, stating the requirements for choosing the appropriate crack sealer, and estimating the number of laborers, time needed, and overall cost of treating bridge deck cracks.
