NCHRP Implementation Support Program. Training on AASHTO Context Classifications
At many transportation agencies, context classification plays a significant role in the planning and design of roadway facilities. The purpose of context classification is to characterize roadways based on land-use data and define how users expect to move in and around an area. NCHRP Research Report 1022: Context Classification Application: A Guide presents a guide to assist state, regional, and local planners in identifying the appropriate context classification(s) for an area or a transportation project. Critical questions that the report addressed included what the context(s) were, how those context(s) would change (spatially and temporally), and what the implications were for various travel modes. NCHRP Research Report 1022 includes a summary of approaches that state, regional, and local transportation agencies have used to determine the context classification of a project, included form-based codes, an inventory of data sources and tools that could be applied to context classification decisions, a final report that documents the entire research effort with an executive summary that outlines the research results, and short info-graphic briefing(s) for policy- and decision-makers on the key research findings.
