Roundabout Construction Using Precast Concrete Panels in Virginia
Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has been converting some of the existing intersections to roundabouts to improve safety for the last few years. Recently, two of these projects employed precast concrete panels to expedite construction. Being the first efforts of this kind, VDOT faced some challenges during the construction and gained valuable experience with these types of project. This study will document the challenges and lessons learned from the construction and recommend any changes necessary in the special provision to address some of the challenges. The performance of these panels will also be assessed through visual observation and taking load transfer measurements along the transverse joints. Precast panel are more expensive than the cast-in place alternative but may be justified because of expedited construction times where longer traffic disruption is unacceptable. This documentation would help VDOT implement use of precast concrete panels in construction where appropriate.
