3D Pavement Surface Data to Enhance Roadway Safety

The primary objectives of this research are to investigate 3D pavement surface data to identify, develop, and validate relationships with pavement macrotexture. A literature review will also identify critical thresholds for commonly measured pavement surface properties as well as to identify areas of further research. The research will provide the following: (1) robust relationships with 3D pavement surface data and standard field macrotexture reference measurements used by Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT); (2) critical safety-related thresholds for standard pavement condition measurements made with high-speed 3D systems or profilers; and (3) techniques proposed in literature to indicate friction condition or other safety indicators using 3D data.
