Electric Vehicle Charging Stations at Airport Parking Facilities

Sales of electric vehicles continue to climb. In 2013 electric vehicle sales in the United States were just under 100,000 sold; 2018 there were approximately 350,000 EVs sold in the United States; in 2019 there were approximately 320,000 sold; and in 2020 approximately 330,000 sold. Synthesis 54: Electric Vehicle Charging Stations at Airport Parking Facilities report was published in 2014 with the research and surveys likely being completed over 10 years ago. EV's are becoming a normal mode of transportation and airports need to continue to address this rise in different modes of transportation.   The objective of this synthesis is to describe how airports manage and implement electric vehicle charging stations, identify industry norms, and how airports implement these changes.   Information to be described in a concise report includes (but is not limited to): (1) Describe how airports determine the quantity of EVs needed, how they are paid for, how electricity is paid for (revenue source, grant, or concession); (2) Describe how airports determine the location of EV’s; (3) Describe how airports monitor usage and when an airport identifies more EV charging stations are needed. (4) Describe contingency planning when electricity isn’t available; (5) Describe safety issues; (6) Identify differing needs at small, medium, and large hub airports.
