Airport Property Used for Parks and Recreational Use

ACRP Synthesis 116 Examples of Facility Space Provided for Community Use at Airports surveyed airports of all sizes and found that many airports provide space or property for parks and recreational use and that airports not currently providing such space were curious about developing such uses. The surveyed airports reported that providing land for parks and recreational use provided significant benefits, including (1) a positive addition to a sustainability plan; (2) the development or improvement of relationships with the airport sponsor, the local community and community stakeholders; and (3) the enhancement of the customer experience for airport users.   Airport sustainability plans, the development or improvement of relationships with the airport's sponsor, the local community and community stakeholders, and the enhancement of the customer experience are fundamental and important considerations for airports of all sizes in all locations. A synthesis that describes how providing airport property for parks and recreational uses supports each of these fundamental airport goals would be of great interest to airport administrators, airport sponsors, and community stakeholders of all sizes in the United States and Canada.   The objective of this synthesis is to describe practices at airports that provide airport property for use as parks and other recreational uses.   Information to be described in a concise report includes (but is not limited to): (1) Describe how providing airport property for parks and recreational uses supports the fundamental airport goals of airport sustainability plans, the development or improvement of relationships with the airport's sponsor, the local community and community stakeholders, and the enhancement of the customer experience; (2) Document recreational uses airport property has been used for; (3) Document attributes of successful programs including their management, operations, relevant cost, and the benefits to airports; (4) Document pitfalls or challenges on providing airport property for parks and recreational uses.
