Work Zone Data Exchange Phase 2

Industry partners (i.e., work zone data exchange (WZDx) data users) require a critical mass of active and consistent work zone data feeds from cities, counties, and states to justify substantial engagement in the WZDx project. To rapidly increase the number of jurisdictions able to publish open work zone data feeds, the USDOT is developing a fixed amount, simplified grant program to provide public roadway authorities financial resources and technical assistance to stand up data feeds and address common technical, institutional, and operational barriers. The program will allow public roadway authorities to apply within three categories: (1) projects that will result in the publication of a new WZDx-compliant data feed; (2) projects that will result in increased jurisdictional coverage of an existing WZDx-compliant data feed; and (3) projects that will result in the addition of optional field(s) to an existing WZDx-compliant data feed. Approximately 12 grant awards of $200,000 each will be available to public agencies addressing 1 or more of these 3 categories. The program will incentivize results (i.e., payment when data feeds are published and inclusion of three Challenge Areas) and engage end users of data in the process. The research team anticipates this program will be appealing to small and mid-sized jurisdictions. The WZDx Deployment Support will address the need for complimentary technical support by extending the scope of the existing Work Zone Data Initiative Pilot Site activity to broaden coverage and expand participation by additional IOO agencies not involved in the initial WZDI Pilots. Activities may include Webinars, targeted engagement activities for WZDx microgrant recipients, to include initial in-person workshops and ongoing technical support through in-person and/or virtual meetings, peer exchange workshops – held as in-person events open to all interested parties, case studies documenting noteworthy experiences and lessons learned by WZDx microgrant recipients, and project outcomes to inform update to Work Zone Data Implementation Guide under development through FHWA Work Zone Data Initiative.
