Cooperative Driving Automation Research for Traffic
Building from current and past FHWA CARMA projects (e.g. CARMA Prototype I & II, CARMA TSMO Phases I and II, CARMA IHP, CARMA HIL), the CARMA software suite is established as a powerful tool to assist researchers in advancing Cooperative Driving Automation strategies for new Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) use cases. The CARMA software suite is being developed to be open source using agile software development practices and is hosted on GitHub. It is being used by multiple partners both within the DOT (e.g. FMCSA, MARAD) and external to DOT (e.g. Universities of Cincinnati and Utah) to support light and heavy vehicle testing. Since the CARMA software suite is open source, it is successfully encouraging research collaboration with the goal of understanding the benefits of CDA by partnering with industry, academia, and the public sector. FHWA is pursuing three main research tracks (Traffic, Reliability, and Freight) that support the USDOT CARMA Program which is advancing cooperative driving automation from research to deployment. This specific project is focusing on the traffic research track aiming to advance recurring traffic congestion uses cases on freeways and arterials. This project, in its initial stages, supported by the requested fund, will build upon the capabilities of CARMA to develop, test and demonstrate use cases related to transit management. The research track envisions at a later stage to include use cases related to heavy vehicles. The project deliverables at the minimum will include the following: (1) CDA Feature Development: ConOps, system requirements and algorithm development for the selected use case(s), (2) CDA Verification and Validation: Simulation based testing as well as setting the requirements for closed track and public on-road testing, (3) CDA Analytics: Use Cloud Computing and relying on AI and ML techniques, Performance dashboards, (4) Demonstration and Outreach: Support webinars/workshops and conferences; Final demonstration of the developed feature.
