Port Autonomous/Connected Drayage Truck Development and Testing

Demonstration of Autonomous/Connected Vehicles in a Port Environment Multi-year Phased project. Budget for Government and OEMs - $3M year 1 and $1M year 2. Phase I, Aberdeen Proving Ground (FY 2020). Demonstrate connected vehicles and autonomous vehicle technology applications with loading and unloading of chassis and containers, CBP inspection point passage, gate passage, and short-haul drayage. This FY 2020 Project will demonstrate and test the application at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. Through an open competition the research team will select and develop a port terminal layout. This project will identify a layout and configuration to demonstrate the concept of the actual port. The team will then reconstruct that layout at Aberdeen and test the concept for a period of 90 days. In addition to the USDOT vehicles the team will open this testing and development to private sector truck manufacturers. Phase II, Port Terminal (by FY 2021). This will take the test trucks to a port terminal and complete a demonstration. A port in China "Caofeidian" is set to become the world's first fully autonomous harbor by the end of 2018. Singapore is hauling cargo between terminals with autonomous trucks. Volvo has developed an autonomous container concept truck.
