Synthesis of Lacustrine Wave Scour Evaluation Methods

A scour analysis is required for all new bridges over water, including bridges through lakes and reservoirs. Wave action may be the primary driver of erosion in these lacustrine environments; however, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) provides no guidance on predicting scour depths caused by wave action in still waters. In Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT's) normal course of work, it would perform a scour evaluation for all bridges over water but currently there is not guidance on how to do so for bridges in lakes and reservoirs. This synthesis will develop guidance for conducting scour analyses for bridges in lacustrine environments, where wave action may be the primary driver of erosion.
