Evaluation of Structural Adhesives as "Steel Grouting" in Steel Bridge Repairs
This project will focus on experimental evaluation of structural adhesives intended for filling gaps in steel bridges to prevent crevice corrosion and improve the loading conditions. The study will incorporate both bulk material testing of selected structural adhesives and structural testing of steel connections. The material properties to be evaluated include compressive strength and creep behavior under sustained compressive and environmental loads. The compressive creep tests will also be conducted to quantify the compressibility of structural adhesives considering environmental loading. The slip coefficient of adhesives in slip-critical bolted connections will be determined through slip tests, while the slip performance of adhesives in a slip-critical connection subject to sustained tensile and environmental loading will be evaluated through tensile creep tests. The project will also include field investigations on previously implemented structural adhesives to report their performance to date.
