Characterization of Unbound Materials for Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design for NDOT Districts 2 and 3 (NDOT 227-20-803)

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) adopted the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) as an interim pavement design standard in 2008. The MEPDG conducts advanced mechanistic analysis of the pavement structure while taking into consideration the combined contributions of traffic, climate, and materials properties. In the case of unbound materials, the resilient modulus (Mr) value for each of the base, borrow, and subgrade layers is the main required engineering property. A proper estimation of the Mr value for locally available unbound materials used in base, borrow, and SG layers becomes critical for designing long-lasting flexible and rigid pavements in Nevada. Currently, the Mr properties of unbound materials from Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) District 1 are being estimated from new relationships that were developed in the 2017 study while the Mr properties of unbound materials from NDOT Districts 2 and 3 are still being determined using the old relationship. This study is to enhance the Mr prediction models for NDOT Districts 2 and 3. Implementation of proper Mr prediction models has a strong probability of improving the sustainability of Nevada’s roadway network through the use of reliable and representative characterization of the existing unbound materials; leading to better performing pavements.
