Statistical Analysis of COVID-19's Impact on Transit Ridership for CTA Rail, CTA Bus, PACE and METRA (Pilot Study)
The COVID-19 pandemic has had far-reaching impacts on public health, the economy, and ways of living. In particular, various regulatory strategies (e.g., remote study/work and stay-at-home executive orders, mask mandates for indoor activities, social distancing, and sanitation protocols for public services), along with people’s perceived risk of infection from shared vehicles, have altered people’s travel needs and mode choice behaviors, leading to significant and prevailing public transit ridership reductions. This Illinois Center for Transportation and Illinois Department of Transportation project intends to (i) develop a statistical model for Chicago Transit Authority rail and bus systems by including factors that are related to the recent progression of the COVID-19 pandemic and (ii) collect and prepare data for more comprehensive and intensive studies on all Regional Transportation Authority transit modes. A rigorous data-driven analysis of the pandemic’s impacts on CTA bus and rail ridership will cast insights into the public’s perception of transit system as the pandemic develops. The project will also inform IDOT and Chicago’s RTA about future policy decision making and resource planning during and after the pandemic.
