Ditching Exit Rating Evaluation

This research project conducted a literature review to provide information and recommendations for the evaluation and refining of ditching exit rating regulations (14 CR 25.807(i)(2)) or certification guidance (AC 25-17A). Current regulations (14 CR 25.807(i)(2)) provide a ditching exit rating of 35 passengers for each exit above the waterline at least the size of a type-III exit. Certification documents provided evidence and justification for higher passenger ratings for larger doors (Type-I and Type-A), but those ratings are not widely known, are exceptions to the regulations, and validation was based on proprietary testing. It is recommended that research be conducted to support verification/validation of the current ratings used in type certifications (Type-III/Type-I/Type-A) and the full range of ratings be codified in regulation or guidance to reduce future confusion in airplane certification efforts.
