Multimodal Transit with Citopia

This project is an exploratory effort to demonstrate complete multimodal trips with seamless itinerary, ticketing, and payment on Citopia decentralized platform using mobiNET as the trust anchor. Citopia will us blockchain technology to ensure that the sovereign identities (anchored in mobiNET) of travelers, transit agencies, vehicles (e.g., train, bus, car, scooter...), and mobility service providers are compatible, can communicate, and can transact while preserving data privacy. Users’ personally (or organizationally) identifiable information (PII) will remain on the users’ device or server. The demonstration will use simulated data, along with sovereign identities linked with timestamped locations, and enable the linkage to be certified throughout a trip in a trusted network. The work will be carried out in two stages. Work in Stage I will comprise the development of the technologies and systems necessary for a simulated demonstration; define user and provider journeys; develop a multimodal decentralized application (dApp) on top of the Citopia platform; integrate Citopia with mobiNET core services (DID-based decentralized sovereign identity, assurance, and governance); and generate simulated mobility data to be used during the demo. The research team will define high-level requirements for a multimodal trip, which will then inform the creation of user journeys, user stories, prioritized product backlog, dApp screen designs, and ultimately, development of the multimodal dApp for each user category including travelers, transit agencies, and third-party modal service-providers. Subsequently, either a mobile application interface will be developed or a web application interface to satisfy the requirements for each user category. Integration tasks will be performed, such as integrating mobiNET sovereign identities via a software-development-kit (SDK) into Citopia platform dApp; establishing trusted communication channels between Citopia and mobiNET; and leveraging mobiNET core services (e.g., orchestrating identities of travelers, vehicles, and providers or coordinating communication of pertinent trip data between modal service providers) to execute seamless multimodal trips on Citopia platform and create verifiable MOBI Trusted Trip records. The team will verify successful utilization of mobiNET core services to validate simulated decentralized sovereign identities for all stakeholders in Citopia, exposing only permitted and necessary user (traveler and provider) data such that users’ PII remains on the users’ device or server. This would include a round of system-based end-to-end (E2E) testing between Citopia platform dApp functions and mobiNET core services, including performance testing of both Citopia and mobiNET separately as well as fully integrated. With the mobile and web application interfaces built using high-level requirements, user journeys, user stories, etc., user acceptance testing will begin. In addition to testing, the team will define the necessary simulated data for the demonstration of multimodal trip events. A complete demo will be planned. Citopia platform will utilize the simulated dataset and mobiNET core services to create a series of MOBI Trusted Trip records. These records will include a variety of such trips, with a range of transit modals, events, lengths, and other factors. The team will demonstrate, using the mobile dApp, how travelers, by virtue of using self-sovereign identity and blockchain technologies, can seamlessly manage planning, ticketing, and payment for multiple transportation modes. The team will also demonstrate how transit agencies and modal service providers can use their web dApps to manage their service offerings and make modal trip data available. In the final Stage 2, the simulated testing results from the Demo in Stage 1 shall be evaluated for scalability, practicality, and possible other KPIs. This evaluation will seek to understand the useability and efficiency of the system while capturing and contextualizing the performance metrics. The results from the testing period will be evaluated by the research team. Performance metrics will include but will not be limited to transaction throughput of the system in terms of the number of trips/travelers the system can handle during peak and off-peak periods throughout the day. The final report will include all relevant information as well as the results as determined by the testing and evaluation. The research team’s recommendations and requirements to pilot the system in a real-world environment for a city/region will also be provided.
