Modernize Hydrologic Prediction Processes by Creating Custom Statewide SSURGO Green and Ampt Parameter Database (NDOT 674-19-803)
The current edition of the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) Drainage Manual was last updated in 2006. Though it is based on the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ model drainage manual, new improved methods of monitoring hydrologic processes have been developed. NDOT presently uses the NRCS Curve Number method for estimating runoff; however, the NRCS Curve Number method does not consider rainfall intensity and duration, but only total rainfall volume and is a curve fitting empirical method. The Green and Ampt methodology, which is a physically based rainfall loss determination method, has shown to provide significantly improved accuracy and reliability in projection of soil infiltration. Increased reliability in improving hydrologic prediction also improves designs and makes possible more consistent project cost estimates. The Green and Ampt soils infiltration parameters were computed for all Nevada SSURGO soil map units and for the Nevada STATSGO general soils, the results of which include a productive course of action.
