Development of a Geotechnical Asset Management System for KDOT

“Transportation asset management (TAM) plans are an essential management tool,” according to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) [1]. Geotechnical Asset Management (GAM) systems are a critical element of TAMs, where geotechnical assets include walls, slopes, embankments, and subgrades within the right of way. While Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has a TAM, it does not currently have a significant GAM component. The objective of this research is to develop the framework of a GAM tool in consultation with KDOT and to begin the process of populating the tool with existing retaining wall data. KU will locate the assets and develop a computer-based system for tracking assets. TXST will develop the KDOT calibrated user inputs for wall conditions, safety/mobility risks, and associated costs for the needed life-cycle cost analysis. These user inputs will be imported into the KU system. The final results will be a GAM tool for walls in Kansas. It anticipated this tool will be based in ArcGIS, however the final decision will be made in consultation with KDOT. Parsons, Han, and Kulesza have cooperated on multiple retaining wall projects over the past few years and this data, along with additional data collected for this project, would be used for initial population of the system.
