Synthesis of Information Related to Airport Practices. Topic S09-10. Airport Turf and Vegetation Management
Airports, especially general aviation, non-hub, and those with geographic terrain issues, have challenges with maintaining the turf and vegetation in and around the airfield. Many airports have responsibility for the maintenance of many acres of land that pose a challenge to maintain. Sample challenges can be staffing, equipment, weather, seasonality, geography, wildlife, and regulatory issues. A synthesis on the means, methods, techniques, and practices for managing the airfield, especially at airports that have quite varied terrain, would benefit airport management. Focus should be on airport maintenance practices (mowing and other vegetation management) and not agricultural or forest management. Airports could use guidance on how to best utilize their limited resources, and to tackle different terrain and operational constraints. The objective of this research is to provide guidance on current airfield practices for turf and vegetation management given the various constraints of staffing, equipment, safety, funding, climate, and regulations. The audience for this research is airfield managers and staff from general aviation and non-hub airports.
