High Bond Steel Fibers for Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC)
This project will develop a new type of steel fiber for use in ultrahigh performance concrete (UHPC). These new fibers have a modified surface to ensure highly effective anchorage into the UHPC matrix. Work in Stage 1 will focus on developing a viable technique to manufacture the new fibers in commercial quantities and characterize their performance in UHPC. Economic and practical viability of manufacturing fibers with specific striation patterns and depths will be investigated. Once a pertinent surface modification pattern is selected, a machine will be built to produce steel fibers with this new pattern (HiPer Fibers). The machine design will be based on an existing design that has been found to be quite versatile and efficient. Tensile and compression properties of UHPC specimen made with HiPer fibers at various fiber dosages will be characterized and compared with another control set made with smooth steel fibers. In Stage 2, the developed HiPer fibers will be applied in a demonstration project and their performance evaluated to assess their efficacy and viability for bridge construction applications. In conjunction with the St. Clair County Road Commission (SCCRC), the HiPer fibers will be implemented in a bridge rehabilitation project. An appropriate fiber dosage will be recommended and a contractor identified to help pour the bridge slabs. Data from field test will be analyzed. The data will include (1) documenting if the fibers cause any mixing problems compared to regular fibers, (2) the time needed for the mix to ‘turn over’, and (3) the mix’s spread compared to traditional mixes. Tension and compression samples will also be collected during field test to compare the results to laboratory results.
