Cell Phone Blocking Technology to Reduce Distracted Driving

This project will conduct a literature review and program scan to document what types of blocking technologies currently exist, how prevalent are they, and how are they being used. It also involves a Pilot Study of up to nine participants to assess whether it is feasible to employ cell phone blocking technology, collect usage data from drivers’ cellphones (data on both the use of cell phone blocking technology and on the use of cell phones while driving, i.e. distracted driving), and collect naturalistic driving observation of distracted driving involving cell phones in a larger, hypothetical Full Study. The hypothetical Full Study would address the research question of whether blocking technologies reduce the amount of device use while driving. In addition, it would address whether the use of blocking technologies reduce the amount of related dangerous driving behaviors, crashes, and near-crash events. The results from this project will provide evidence regarding the effectiveness of cell phone blocking technology as a countermeasure for preventing distracted driving and, if promising, could be used to inform campaigns and program development focused on increasing widespread use of blocking technology.
