Develop a Safety Effectiveness Evaluation Tool for California
Safety is one of Caltrans’ top priorities. Caltrans is in urgent need of a safety tool to evaluate various safety countermeasures and rank and prioritize safety projects. In this project the research team proposes the development of a spreadsheet-based safety project evaluation tool that employs the state-of-the-practice methods, reflects local conditions, and tailors to Caltrans’ needs. This tool will incorporate existing safety-related data for a project and quantify the impacts of one or more countermeasures using expected fatal and serious injury reduction. A key outcome of this project will be an interactive spreadsheet tool that allows performing safety analysis in a straightforward and reproducible fashion. The project will be conducted in partnership with the Safety Division of Caltrans. It is anticipated that the developed tool will be used by safety staff from different Caltrans districts across California.
