Development of Commercial Vehicle Emission Inventory and Analysis

The objective of this research is to create a procedure to collect and analyze data from vehicle activities, vehicle characteristics, operation, and their effect on greenhouse emissions and air toxicity. It is expected that when complete, this research will allow Illinois state agencies to develop policies to further guide and control emissions. This research will focus on commercial vehicles, including vans, small trucks, and large trucks. Specifically, these are the research questions to be addressed in this project: (1) How do the following factors affect commercial vehicle emissions: vehicle miles traveled by vehicle type, vehicle composition by type, vehicle age, speed, road type, fuel information, and meteorology? (2) How to effectively classify commercial vehicles by emission status for targeted policy purposes? (3) How do the study findings inform the strategies for emission controls and electrification in State of Illinois? What are the potential strategies?
