Evaluation of the Asphalt Mixture Design Framework for Airfield Pavements in Illinois
The main objective of this project is to develop a framework that extends the use of existing Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) highway pavement surface and binder hot-mix asphalt (HMA) to nonprimary airfield pavement applications. To achieve this objective, the scope of this project is twofold. First, the research team will evaluate existing IDOT-certified HMA for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) volumetric and performance requirements. The volumetric requirements include aggregate gradation, voids in mineral aggregates, air void content, and asphalt binder content, while performance requirements may include indirect Tensile Strength ratio, complex modulus (for FAARFIELD tool), Illinois Flexibility Index Test (I-FIT), and Hamburg Wheel Track Test. Second, the research team will investigate possible needed modifications, such as binder grade and asphalt binder content, to meet FAA requirements. Efforts will be made to minimize changes in aggregate gradations. The research team will deliver clear documentation as to how the IDOT-certified mixes meet FAA specifications for nonprimary airports.
