The Typology of Transportation Accessibility: A Qualitative and Quantitative Meta-Analysis
Accessibility, one of the central concepts in transportation planning and policy, generally refers to a number of activity locations (destinations) within a particular travel time or physical distance. The level of accessibility is measured by the number of activity centers an individual can reach as a function of distance from an individual's home and the number of the intervening distance. The level of accessibility is affected by various factors such as vehicle ownership, availability of ride help from family or neighborhood, quality of government services, distance to public transit, affordability, and others. While many studies employed or developed methods to estimate the level of accessibility by activity types, no study has evaluated the reliability of various estimation equations by activity types. The study's goal is to identify typologies of accessibility definitions and measurements. The objectives are two-fold. First, a text analysis using MAXQDA pro 12, a commercial and affordable text analysis program, will be conducted to identify keywords by study types -- i.e., activity types. Second, meta-analysis will be conducted using R-Statistics, a free statistics program, to estimate the statistical reliability of studies by activity types.
