Support for AASHTO Committees and Councils. System Mobility and Emerging Technologies (SMET): Strategic Planning Session and Research Roadmap Development

The joint subcommittee on System Mobility and Emerging Technologies (SMET), formed in 2017, is in need of a strategic plan and roadmap. The joint subcommittee formally merges the related work of the Committee on Transportation System Operations (CTSO) and the Committee on Performance-Based Management (CPBM). It also maintains a collaborative relationship with the Committee on Data Management and Analytics (CDMA). The joint subcommittee aims to fulfill the following: (1) Serve as a forum to share how state DOTs are managing system operation and system mobility and how system performance is impacted due to current and emerging transportation technologies, operational strategies, and connected environments. (2) Explore system and mobility related performance, data and analytical tools, performance communication, reporting approaches, research, and related private sector partnerships. (3) Examine the impacts of current and emerging system management approaches such as Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) technology, Cooperative Automated Transportation (CAT), and Mobility on Demand (MOD) programs. This study will include the following tasks: 1) develop a comprehensive strategic approach and action plan to coordinate the activities of the joint subcommittee to guide their future actions, and 2) to develop a longer-term research strategy to continue to advance the state of practice in system mobility and emerging technologies.
