Develop Closure Joint Materials Specification and Evaluate Performance for Side-By-Side Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) Superstructure Systems

Closure joints are a necessary aspect of Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) superstructures. The goal is to have materials that cure and gain strength rapidly to reopen the facility to traffic, but without compromising the long-term durability. TxDOT needs high performance concretes or other alternate materials that meet this objective. TxDOT has three construction projects (OSR at Navasota River and adjacent structures in Bryan District; five bridges in Amarillo District; and IH 635 at Seagoville Rd in Dallas District) that have closure joints specified in accelerated bridge construction. Each is imposing two specification options for these closure joints. In this project, researchers will focus tests on developing high performance concrete mix designs geared towards high early strength, but durable closure joints for traffic exposure within 12-24 hours. The research team will develop a matrix of mix designs targeting attributes of strength (4000 psi at 12-24 hours), permeability, shrinkage, bond strength, and cracking behavior under load. They will perform a limited number of lab structural tests to evaluate cracking/serviceability under service load, as well as tests to ultimate load and will undertake field monitoring of the constructed bridges to monitor attributes of the specified mix design used in the field. Deliverables will include a research report documenting the findings of the research, including a matrix of mix design variables and the matrix of tests prior to conducting the test program, results of the test program and the recommended mix design, and results of the field monitoring program.
