Innovative Contracting Best Practices
Innovative contracting methods have been used by MDOT for several years because of the significant improvements these methods bring to project delivery. They have generated substantial value in safety, cost, and time benefits. Many transportation departments use innovative contracting methods to reduce the costs of constructing facilities and to obtain greater certainty regarding future costs. Techniques to avoid and manage risk are important tools in achieving this goal. Contracting methods have been tested and utilized in Michigan and many other states to improve safety, cost, risk and/or time management. Documenting the contracting methods that have been effectively utilized in Michigan or adopted from other states for future use in Michigan will help MDOT innovate and improve its project delivery program.
