Characterizing High-Risk and Older Novice Drivers
This project will propose a hypothetical naturalistic driving study with younger (age 15.5 – 16.5) and older (age 18 – 20) novice drivers in the first six months of independent driving to answer research questions about the variation in risky driving behavior during this critical learning period. The researchers will review relevant existing studies, including studies of how novice drivers’ risk changes over the initial period of independent driving, studies of predictors of risky driving in novices, and studies of the driving performance and behavior of novices age 18 or older. The researchers also will develop, design, and determine potential challenges for conducting a hypothetical study that involves collecting self-reported demographic, psychological, or other information, and naturalistic driving data during the first six months of independent driving, from 60 younger novice drivers and 60 older novice drivers.
