Understanding the Needs of Current and Potential Bus Transit Riders
New Jersey ranks among the top states in terms of public transit use, where bus trips constitute almost 60% of all transit trips. Like many other parts of the country, bus ridership has been steadily decreasing in New Jersey since 2015. This trend is concerning because buses help to alleviate congestion and provide service to numerous New Jersey residents and workers who have no other means to travel. The primary objective of this research will be to comprehend the reasons for the decline in bus ridership and identify ways to reverse the trend. The research will include the following broad tasks: Review of literature; review of past ridership data; outreach with transit agencies from other parts of the country; survey of New Jersey residents about their willingness to use buses as well as their perception of buses and bus riders; analysis of survey data; research synthesis, report writing; and project management.
