National Survey on Bicyclist and Pedestrian Attitudes and Behaviors

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) periodically administers the National Survey on Bicyclist and Pedestrian Attitudes and Behaviors (NSBPAB) to collect information on the extent to which the public engages in bicycling and walking; descriptions of bicyclists and pedestrians; the extent and frequency of using electronic devices while biking or walking; attitudes and perceptions about bicycling and pedestrian activity; the availability and use of bike paths and lanes in the community; and knowledge of various laws pertaining to bicyclists and pedestrians. This will be NHTSA's third NSBPAB. Previous national surveys on bicyclists and pedestrians were conducted in 2002 and 2012. Survey items shall explore attitudes and behaviors of respondents regarding their (and others’) biking and walking experiences, and related psychological and demographic factors. The new questionnaire will be based on the 2012 NSBPAB questionnaire, with additional questions developed based on recent research and technological developments including levels of stress for bicyclists, newer road facilities, e-bikes and e-scooters, and evolving traffic safety technologies. This project will ascertain the scope and magnitude of bicycle and pedestrian activity and the public’s behavior and attitudes regarding bicycling and walking by conducting a national survey of a randomly selected sample of individuals ages 18 and older. The project will also determine whether the level of bicycling and walking has changed since the 2012 administration of the survey.
