Development of Drone-Assisted Pavement Profile Mapping: Near-Surface Void Detection Application
The main objective is to develop and test a drone-assisted workflow to be employed in planning road pavement maintenance work as well as post-maintenance work quality assessment with the specific aim of identifying near-surface voids. The developed process would provide Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) personnel with a report indicating location of areas needing repair and after repair, status reports of work performed by GDOT maintenance contractors. The proposed workflow would use images (visual and Infrared (IR)) and GPR data collected by drones that would be processed by algorithms developed at Georgia Tech in order to identify problem areas and determine if needed pavement repairs have been performed.
