Concrete Box Culvert Earth Pressure Monitoring

Earth pressures on concrete box culverts is a key component of design and load rating decisions. The accurate determination of these pressures is thus critical, as soil conditions vary greatly from state to state. To gain a better understanding of actual pressures on concrete box culverts in Iowa, a culvert located in Ida County was instrumented in early 2016 with strain gages and pressure cells. Data has been collected since this time and should be post-processed and analyzed to develop recommendations for earth pressures associated with Iowa soil conditions and construction methods, and is thus the objective of this proposed work. The previously instrumented box culvert in Ida County provides valuable strain and pressure data over the course of two years, thus offering insight as to seasonal variations. The objective of this project is to analyze the data that has been collected and determine actual earth pressures associated with Iowa soil conditions for use during both the design and load rating of box culverts.
