Investigating the service of app-based rideshare and transportation network companies in Tennessee

Ridesharing, or ridehailing, refers to on-demand transportation services where “rides are arranged through mobile apps that connect a traveler with a driver operating his or her personal vehicle”.These on-demand services “add flexibility to rideshare arrangements by allowing drivers and passengers to arrange occasional shared rides ahead of time or on short notice”. Ridesharing services are provided by privately- operated transportation network companies (TNCs), such Uber and Lyft, and these new transportation services have grown extremely rapidly in the last decade. Recent estimates suggest that there will be approximately 4.2 billion TNC rides in the United States by the end of 2018. Given the dramatic growth of TNCs over a very short time, there is currently limited understanding of how people are using ridesharing services and how they are affecting urban transportation systems. This is complicated by the fact that TNCs are reluctant to share their data with external organizations. To this end, numerous prominent academics have called upon TNCs to share data with the public or researchers, but there has been little progress. In light of the rapidly growing use of TNCs and the limited availability of TNC-provided data, this study will assess rideshare usage in the state of Tennessee using new, survey-based datasets. Detailed data about TNC users will be collected in a similar manner to the most cutting-edge rideshare studies from the literature.
