Impact of LRFR Method on Load and R Posting of Bridges

The department currently uses LFD/ASD methodology as specified in EI 05-034 “Load Rating/Posting Guidelines for State-Owned Bridges” to determine if a bridge requires Load or “R” Posting. A previous research project, that was concluded very recently, developed a load rating procedure based on federally mandated load and resistance factor rating method (LRFR).The goal of this project is to determine if implementation of the draft Engineering Instruction “LRFR Load Rating/Posting Guidelines for State-Owned Highway Bridges” will significantly change the Weight Limit of existing state-owned Load Posted bridges and number of Load and “R” Posted state-owned bridges. Based on the analyses, the project also aims at developing a rating methodology for unratable bridges such as rigid frames and arches.There are 3D finite element methods available, but we are looking to develop a simplified analysis method and software that can be used easily by our load rating engineers. Proposed actions: Load rate approximately 300 state-owned bridges using both LRFR and LFD/ASD methodologies (bridges that are currently or close to requiring Load and “R” Posting will be analyzed. Load and “R” Posting requirements will be determined using both methodologies) ; Develop a method (along with software) that can be used by NYSDOT to get reliable load ratings for unratable bridges such as rigid frames and arches ; Compare the load ratings using both methodologies and their effect on load postings ; Refine the LRFR Engineering instruction if needed.
