Supporting Transportation System Operations and Management Using Internet of Things Technology
Recently, there has been a significant interest in Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technologies for supporting Internet of Things (IoT) devices to wirelessly communicate with various applications over the long range. LPWAN is a generic term for an array of technologies that enable long-range communications at low cost and low energy consumption. The overarching goal of this project is to examine the potential of using IoT technologies to support transportation system management and operations. In particular, it will focus on the exploration of existing LPWAN technologies. The specific objectives are: (1) To compare and contrast the capabilities of LPWAN technologies for providing IoT communications. This includes the assessment of off-the-shelf products. (2) To identify traffic operations and Smart City applications that are likely to benefit from the LPWAN technologies and to develop a testing plan. (3) This study will conduct a literature review, surveys, and targeted outreach to gather information on LPWAN capabilities and applications. The results of this study will lead to pilot tests of promising LPWAN technologies in a future phase of the research.
