Applying Civic Innovation Methods to Advance Safety Education: A Pilot Program
This effort, developed in partnership with the civic innovation firm Urban Impact Lab, seeks to integrate Safe Systems principles with new approaches to grassroots-organizing and civic engagement. Specifically, it seeks to: (1) Develop new, grassroots methods for engaging users on traffic safety; (2) Apply social learning principles to understand opportunities for integrating safety considerations into local cultures; (3) Collaborate with community stakeholders to proactively identify local safety needs, with a specific focus on mechanisms for engaging school-age students, who are important current users and future stakeholders, yet do not typically have a direct voice in planning or policy decisions; and (4) Pilot and test the effectiveness of these engagement techniques, and translate the results into model practices, activities, and programs that can be applied in other communities.
