Seasonal Use of ODOT Bridges by Bats

This project will create a suitability model of bat use of bridges based on any number of variables such as bridge type, landscape features, etc. that can be used in early project delivery stages to coordinate bat impacts, if anticipated, prior to construction. Additionally, it is anticipated that certain bridge types will categorically be excluded as potential habitat and not need further inspection. This research is expected to be the first step towards developing a geospatial predictive model of bridges in Ohio that serve as suitable bat roosting habitat. The goal of this research is to provide Ohio Department of Transportation's (ODOT's) Office of Environmental Services with a tool (e.g.-suitability index) that assists in identifying bridges that serve as suitable bat roosting locations. The objectives of this research are to: (1) Determine characteristics of bridges used for roosting by bats; (2) Identify any correlations of surrounding ecological features with suitable bridges; and (3) Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database of bridges used by bats (using the bridges that were sampled).
