Factors Affecting the Successful Electrification of the Vehicle Fleet at Caltrans: The Purchase and Operation of Zero-Emission, Medium- and Heavy-Duty Battery-Electric and Fuel Cell Vehicles

The purchase and successful operation of electrified vehicles depend on a number of factors different than those for engine-powered vehicles. This project will investigate those factors as they particularly apply to Caltrans fleet. A compilation is prepared of the Caltrans fleet as a first step in assessing what is possible for future electrification of the fleet. Caltrans has a large number of vocational vehicles with special functionality which could be very difficult to electrify. Similarly there are a large number vehicles with conventional characteristics for which electrification should be straightforward. Validation (to the maximum certainty possible) is performed that the electrified vehicles selected for electrification will be a suitable replacements for the corresponding engine-powered vehicle in terms of performance and functionality. validation process involves detailed simulations of the electric trucks to calculate their energy consumption (kWh) on the routes they will be used including the effects of ambient temperature and road conditions to confirm that battery selected for the vehicles will meet the range requirements. Ownership costs of the trucks to be electrified were calculated for comparison with those of the engine-powred vehicles.
