Implementation of Streamflow Measurement

TxDOT maintains an inventory of about 54,000 bridges, around half of which lie on stream or river reaches whose discharges are forecast by the National Water Model. This inventory includes both “on-system” bridges owned and maintained by the agency and “off-system” bridges owned and maintained by cities, counties, and other entities. The National Water Model supports streamflow measurements made by the USGS at about 550 locations in Texas. While about 100,000 stream reaches are being forecast in Texas by the National Water Model, only about one reach in 180 actually has stream discharge measurements. It is evident that denser stream forecasting will require denser measurements. This implementation project will enhance measurement at TxDOT bridges that could support the operation of the National Water Model, and also demonstrate how a flood forecasting system for the bridges could be developed based on the National Water Model.
