Bridge Decks: Mitigation of Shrinkage Cracking - Phase III

The objective of Phase III is to continue to apply combined knowledge of construction materials and structural design to complete the development of a holistic approach that lessens premature cracking in concrete bridge decks in Illinois. The materials part will focus on developing robust concrete mixes using combination of LWA with Type K cement/SRAs. Based on the success of the first two phases, a suitable combination of LWA and SRA/Type K can provide more advantage that the sum of the two when used separately. However, further research is needed to fully understand the interaction before effective implementation. The structural part (SLU) will build and monitor two bridge deck models using the above combinations. Parametric finite element analyses will be performed to investigate the effects internal restraint and the efficacy of proposed crack mitigation measures. Instrumentation of a bridge deck in the field may also be performed but it’s cost is not included in the project.
