Roadway Lighting's Effect on Pedestrian Safety at Intersection and Midblock Crosswalks

The goal of this study is to understand the effects of crosswalk lighting design on pedestrian safety at both midblock and intersections. Here, lighting design refers to both luminare placement and lighting levels. The study will also attempt to determine the optimal design at intersections for improved visibilitiy for motorists of pedestrians, vehicles, turning movements, and all other road users within the intersection. The determined safety will be compared to the effects of existing safety countermeasures. In addition, the effects of combination treatments on pedestrian safety will be evaluated.
