Corrosion Resistant Steel Bridges on Virginia's Eastern Shore
This study will evaluate and document the use of ASTM A709 Grade 50CR (50CR) for the Jenkins Bridge Road Bridge (JBRB) replacement structure and for bolted repairs on the Rt. 1002 Bridge located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The study will also entail continued corrosion monitoring of both structures. Large-and small-scale corrosion testing will also be conducted at the JBRB site of multiple corrosion protection systems, such as 50CR, galvanized, metalized, painted, and duplex stainless steels. A cost analysis will be performed on the 50CR used for both bridges. Upon completion of the project, guidance will be provided to Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) regarding how and when to use 50CR and other alloyed corrosion resistant steels in a more cost-effective manner.
