Balanced Mix Design for Asphalt Mixtures: High RAP Field Trials
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has developed a special provision for use with field trials of mixtures having greater than 40% Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) contents that uses Balanced Mix Design concepts to specify as-designed mixture performance. This project will document and assess field trials constructed under VDOT’s Special Provision for High RAP Content Surface Mixtures Designed Using Performance Criteria. These trials will serve as a validation for the mix design special provision as it is applied to full-scale production. The trials will also provide a resource to begin evaluating the impact of performance specifications on the long-term performance of pavement surfaces.
