Clear Roads II: Review and Summary of Pre-wet Methods and Procedures
This new Clear Roads project will maintain its focus on advancing winter highway operations nationally through practical, practice-ready research related to materials, equipment and methods. State departments of transportation are aggressively pursuing new technologies, practices, tools, and programs to improve winter highway operations and safety while maintaining fiscal responsibility. This project represents Phase I of a two-part project. Phase I will gather and synthesize existing knowledge, data, and current practices about pre-wetting solids for winter maintenance that will inform and underlie the work of a future Phase II. Pre-wetting refers to the application of liquid on solids (salt, abrasives or other materials) as the solids are being spread on the roadway from a winter maintenance vehicle. Pre-wetting may be used to reduce the bounce and scatter of solids, to activate solid salt as a melting agent, and to inhibit corrosive effects of salt on metal.
