Synthesis of Information Related to Highway Practices. Topic 51-09. Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Joint Sealant Practices and Performance

Final Scope In recent decades, portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement sealing practices have changed substantially. There is a significant non-uniformity and inconsistency for joint sealant applications among transportation agencies. Joint sealing practices have changed over time, but current practice and performance has not been documented. Despite their widespread use, questions exist as to the efficacy of and need for joint sealing practices in PCC pavements. The objective of this synthesis is to document current practices with PCC pavement joint sealant in new construction and the maintenance protocol of existing joint sealants for PCC pavements. Information to be gathered will include, but is not be limited to: · Whether or not PCC pavement joint sealants are used · Types of materials used for PCC pavement joint sealant · Constructions methods used for PCC pavement joint sealant · Use of NTPEP data for product approval Inspection and/or acceptance procedures and specifications used for PCC pavement joint sealants · Long-term PCC joint sealant performance · Issues surrounding PCC joint sealant usage or effectiveness such as water presence or movement and noise contributions · Alternative methods being used in lieu of sealants (e.g. penetrating sealers) in an attempt to better control the saturation level of the joint face, including their specifications, performance, and installation procedures Information will be collected through literature review, survey of DOTs possibly through relevant AASHTO on Materials and Pavements, and follow-up interviews with selected agencies for the development of three to five case examples documenting successful practices. Information gaps and suggestions for research to address those gaps will be identified.
